Good afternoon friends. As we begin the month
of April, we would normally presume that the
tail end of our yearly stonefly hatch, the
Skwalla has concluded and the beginning of our
mayfly season on the Yakima is just beginning.
This year, 2014 is not the case.
Our annual deposits of snow pack did not arrive
until the beginning days of February and
beforehand it was looking to be a low water year
in the river valley. Our friends that like to
spend their winter days slashing and crashing
down the slopes of our local ski hills were
having serious withdraws and it was looking like
their
equipment was going to collect dust throughout
the winter. That all changed the second month of
the new year as heavy amounts of precipitation
pounded the high elevations of the Cascades
Mountain Range, blanketing them in a coat of
heavy white powder. Our annual water reserves
are now intact and the treasury of summer water
shouldn’t be an issue for fish or farmers. Due
to that late arrival of precipitation, we have
experienced a change in the time table of insect
hatches that normally occurs, especially the
stonefly hatch.
The adult Skwalla Stoneflies that we
typically begin seeing around the second
week of February just started returning to
the water's edges last week. Big stonefly
falls in the afternoon are happening now
throughout the river as the female species
drop to the river's edge to lay their
blackened egg sacs. Of course, once
this begins it marks the start of our dry
fly fishing on the Yakima, the art that
truly propels and drives the sport of fly
fishing. Casting your favorite Skwalla
pattern along the edges, where
concentrations of stoneflies have converged
creates a fun post winter fly fishing
experience. Trout also stage and lie
in wait in these areas, eagerly anticipating
an afternoon snack of this large, dark
bodied morsel.
Looking ahead, we anticipate April to be the
month of spring that produces not only the
best possible fishing, but the best water
conditions as well. The majority of all the
low elevation snow pack surrounding the
river valley has disappeared and came
gushing out of the hills due to periods of
rainfall we experienced in March. Small
rivers and streams like the Teanaway, Tanuem
and Swauk Creek all gushed low elevation
water run off throughout the entire month of
March.
Even a few windy days in the valley help reduce
the height of snow pack around the base of the
river and a lot of this water ends up recharging
the ground water reserve. With unfrozen ground
this year, the dry lose soil soaked up the
melting snow pack quickly. Cooler then normal
night time lows are projected throughout the
month and very little precipitation is
anticipated in Central Washington as well. This
will produce great river conditions and we will
experience hatches of stoneflies as well as
March Brown and Blue Wing Olive Mayflies.
You can also expect to see hatches of caddisflies
towards the end of April. The yearly Mother’s Day
Caddis event will begin the first week of May.
Usually in May, the weather warms up and higher
elevation snow can begin melting. All of that
softening snow that is not collected by the Yakima
River's Water Reservoirs will come flowing out of
the hills and be deposited into the river, adding
more volume and less favorable water conditions.
This of course is hard to predict, but is a typical
pattern for the month of May.

The mayfly hatch is now in
its infant stages, but as the week
progresses we will begin seeing more and
more of them in the afternoon. Because our
season was slow to start, we are extending
our “PRE-SEASON GUIDED TRIP SPECIAL”
giving you the opportunity to get outdoors
and experience some great fishing, while
soaking up some of our warm Central
Washington sunshine!
Now thru the end of April you can experience
a WBFC guided trip on the Yakima River at
our reduced rate! Take advantage and come
fly fishing during what we expect to be the
best month of spring-2014.
After this intense hatch of mayflies, we will
concentrate and teach you three other exciting elements
of fishing the Yakima River during this time
frame.
The mayflies that have drowned in the
surface film during the hatch are being
eaten just under that meniscus. We
will fish drowned emergers and soft hackles
to mimic this food source.
The remaining adult mayflies that are
floating along the edges, back pools and
eddies of the river current become targeted
and big trout stage in these key area's
after the hatch to take advantage of this
easy feed.
The
Skwalla Stonefly fall will be happening
throughout April in the afternoon and we
will target key area's of the river with dry
flies, challenging fish to eat our
imitations.
"EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE"
We understand that there are lots of different
guiding services that you can choose from here in
the valley, so why fish with Worley Bugger? We want
you to know that WE are not all the same! Come
experience the difference and learn the nature of
how and why we fish the Yakima the way we do.
Each team member of our Professional Guide Service
is trained by seasoned fly fishermen with decades of
experience. We tailor our trips to fit the needs of
our customers. It's your day away and we want you to
get the most of it. Each guide at WBFC prefers to
take their time during the day, floating far less
river than others. This gives you, the fly fisher,
an opportunity to cast over actively feeding fish,
while working the key areas of the Yakima that hold
some of the finest fish the river will produce. We
also love to teach and show our customers new and
interesting tactics, so when you’re fishing on your
own, your skills and productivity are honed,
increasing your odds while providing you with a
valuable and enjoyable day on the river.
Think about it this way. When you fish large chunks
of a river you have a set time to move from point
“A” to point “B”. During this time it is inevitable
that you will lose flies, break tippets, take a
lunch break as well as spend some time working on
the fundamentals that are important not only to you
but to the fish. This all takes time. If a guide is
kept busy with these and has committed to a long
8-10 mile float in low water, then they will hardly
have enough time to stop during a hatch of rising
fish, let alone give you the necessary endorsements
and assistance you will need to prefect the craft.
It only makes sense to us that working a smaller
portion of river and making sure we have covered it
completely, increases your chances of catching more
fish, while improving your skills as a fly
fisherman. The Yakima River boosts a healthy
population of trout per mile. Casting at one given
spot, while the guide maintains a boat speed hardly
seems like efficient or fun fly fishing? If you
float 10 to 15 miles of the Yakima
in one afternoon you have literally floated over
10,000-to-15,000 trout. This is our way of thinking
and is one of the ingredients that sets us apart
from our competitors.
We also prefer to
maintain a much smaller staff of guides, not
boasting about the hundreds of trips we do a year
down the river in a season. It is more
important to us to maintain the quality of every
trip we do and focus on each experience, rather than
the quantity of boats we do each day or week.
This way, each member of our staff has built a
volume of customers that returns to fish with them
time after time. Our highest rate of trips are from
repeat customers and referrals from them. We also
have a very low turn over of guides.
WBFC also provides our guide team the necessary and
essential tools to do the job like a professional.
Visit the pro-shop in Ellensburg and you will see
what we mean. A majority of the guides that work
and live in the valley visit the shop on a daily
basis because they need those tools as well. We are
happy to supply them with those tools and advice as
well as anglers around the world with top quality
gear and guidance.
